glass of young red wine

🍷 Why are we drinking increasingly fresher wines?

For a long time, when we talked about a great red wine we thought about structure, concentration, aging, power and aging potential.

Today, however, something is changing.

We increasingly seek wines that are fresh, lively, food-friendly, and easy to drink . Wines with acidity, that don’t weigh us down in the glass, and that make us want to keep drinking.

And this doesn’t mean we like wines with character any less now. On the contrary. Perhaps we’re simply beginning to value character in a different way.

What does it really mean for a wine to be fresh?

When we talk about freshness in a wine, we are not only talking about the temperature at which we serve it.

Freshness is, above all, a sensation in the mouth .

A fresh wine typically has good acidity, defined fruit, a certain tension, and a more agile and light sensation. It doesn’t necessarily have to be low in alcohol, but alcohol is usually not the main focus.

It’s that feeling that makes you want another drink after one.

And here we encounter a word that we hear more and more in the world of wine: drinkability . The ability of a wine to be drunk easily, without tiring or overwhelming the palate.

It’s not about making simple wines.

The aim is to make wines that invite you to drink them.

Less power, more balance

For years, especially in certain areas and styles, there was a certain fascination with concentration.

More fruit.
More alcohol.
More wood.
More extraction.
More intensity.

But today many winegrowers are looking for something else: balance .

Wines with less weight and more precision. With less artifice and more terroir. With fruit, but also with acidity and texture.

This evolution can be observed in many areas of the wine world and coincides with a consumer who, in general, is also changing the way they drink: less quantity, more occasions for consumption and more interest in gastronomic wines that are easy to integrate into everyday life.

Freshness also has a lot to do with the climate

Viticulture today is experiencing a different climatic reality than it did a few decades ago.

Higher temperatures can promote faster ripening of the grapes and, in certain situations, produce wines with higher alcohol content and lower acidity.

That’s why many winegrowers are looking for ways to preserve the freshness of their vineyards: working at higher altitudes, seeking cooler orientations, recovering native varieties, protecting the soils, or bringing forward certain harvest dates.

Freshness is no longer just a matter of style.

In many territories it is also a matter of viticulture and adaptation .

Freshness is also changing red wines

Perhaps one of the most interesting changes is that this trend does not only affect white people.

We are finding more and more red wines designed to be drunk slightly chilled.

Wines with less extraction, less oak, gentler tannins, and more vibrant fruit.

And this is where some Mediterranean varieties can surprise you.

Drink better, not necessarily drink more

Perhaps this is the most interesting part of all.

Wine culture is changing.

Not necessarily because we want to stop drinking wine, but because we are becoming increasingly clear about when, how, and why we want to drink it .

A bottle can be part of a dinner with friends, an aperitif, a summer afternoon, or simply a drink after work.

And for many of these occasions, fresher wines have a huge advantage: they complement without dominating .

You don’t need a heavy meal.

You don’t need to wait for a special occasion.

You don’t need to know much.

All you need is the desire to drink a good glass of wine.
