Did you know that Port wines, also called Porto wines, were created by English merchants at the end of the 17th century?
At that time, wines could not withstand the long sea voyages to reach the British Isles, so the English decided to fortify the wines with alcohol so that they would arrive at their destination in good condition.
The good political and commercial relations between England and Portugal encouraged the purchase of Portuguese wine. The best wine was, and still is, that which comes from the Douro River valley, and the English bought the wine in the Douro and transported it by boat to the city of Porto, where it was fortified with wine alcohol before being shipped to England.
They are now made in a different way, without this bucolic method, but now they are wines of higher quality and we can find different styles of production.
At DVI Vinoteca you can find Port wines from the following wineries: Niepoort, Quevedo, Dalva, Noval,
