Massuria 2021 is the wine that best encapsulates the philosophy of Viñedos y Bodega Mas Asturias , a small winery in Villafranca del Bierzo that cultivates just 4 hectares spread across 14 plots, in smallholdings located in different municipalities of the Bierzo Valley. Made with Mencía grapes from old vines , it is a red wine that precisely expresses the Atlantic and mountainous character of the Bierzo DO .
Mencía is the undisputed star. From old vines trained in the traditional bush vine system , it contributes red and black fruit, floral and mineral notes, and a distinctive freshness . The diversity of vineyard plots adds complexity and nuance, with each corner of the valley contributing its own structure, finesse, or aromatic intensity.
It is a red wine with depth and elegance , the result of precision viticulture done with the head and hands of Josep Mas Asturias , a winegrower and oenologist trained in Bordeaux.

Appearance: Cherry red color, medium-high intensity, with a violet rim and good shine.
Nose: Aromas of cherry, forest fruits and ripe black fruit , with floral and mineral notes, accompanied by sweet spices and a touch of fine, well-integrated oak .
On the palate: Juicy and balanced entry, with ripe, polished tannins and a fresh acidity that adds tension to the whole. Fruit and minerality intertwine with oak aging notes. Long, elegant, and slightly spicy finish .
Massuria is made with Mencía grapes from old, uncloned vines , sourced from the 14 plots the winery cultivates in the Bierzo Valley . Viticulture is respectful and meticulous, and the harvest is done by hand to pick each plot at its optimal point of ripeness.
Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts and gentle maceration to extract the fruit and finesse of the Mencía grape. The wine then rests for approximately one year in new and used French oak barrels , completing its aging process in tanks and bottles. This aging process adds complexity and structure without masking the terroir’s character .
A very gastronomic wine , ideal to accompany red meats, roast lamb, small game, botillo and sausages, mushrooms , stews and cured cheeses .
It’s also a great option for seasonal autumn and winter cooking , and for dishes with mushrooms and grilled meats .
Because it’s a signature wine in the truest sense: a small winery, a few hectares, and a winemaker who knows every vine. Massuria showcases the most elegant and profound side of Mencía from Bierzo .
We particularly appreciate the balance between the fruit, the Atlantic freshness , and the finesse of aging. A wine with soul and precision, perfect for those seeking to discover the most authentic Bierzo or for a special occasion at the table.
